The American Legion Family has volunteered for the Louisiana Special Olympics State Games for over 35 years. This year will probably be different as they have moved the date from the month of May to June. The games will take place the same weekend as our Department Convention. The venue will be changed as well. It will no longer take place at Southeastern University in Hammond. This year it will take place on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. I have been in touch with our contact and many things seem to be very much "up in the air" for the most part. They are trying to iron out some of the issues and logistics which is understandable given the fact that it will take place at a new venue.
I have informed my contact that the American Legion Family will not be able to commit to the Staging of the Softball throw, Javelin events, and Awards presentations as in past years due to the fact that it will be in conflict with our Department Convention where a great many of our volunteers are usually in attendance. If you are not attending the Department Convention and wish to volunteer at Special Olympics, then you may contact Special Olympics directly at (985) 345-6644 or go to the Power Pool the day of the games and ask to be assigned to an event.
We have a lot to be proud of as we have been dedicated volunteers throughout the past 35 plus years. I thank each and every volunteer for their passion in wanting to assist these special athletes. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
