| Flag Disposal Ceremony Held By Newellton Post 174 - June, 2008 |

This is one of the final collection containers for the worn, torn, and faded Flags of our country prior to being placed in the cleansing flame in an honorable, dignified ceremony that is authorized by the National Flag Code of our country.
In a recent ceremony held in conjunction with Flag Day, June 2008, the following groups were represented along with Post 174: Bruin-Vidal Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution; Winter Quarters Staff and State Park members and visitors to Lake Bruin State Park.
American Legion Post 174 and the above groups worked together to make this program a success.

| Newellton Post 174 Hosts Memorial Day 2008 Celebration |

Thanks to everyone who made our 2008 Memorial Day program a success. A special thank you goes out to Mr. Murray Washam and the outstanding Youth Group of the First Baptist Church in Newellton for placing the American Flags on the veterans' graves.
Our Memorial Day ceremony was held in the American Legion Post 174, Newellton. A red, white, and blue wreath was furnished by Ms. Vicki of A-Bou-K Florists and Gifts for our ceremony.
The repaired cemetery flagpole and mechanism is in good shape once again after the storm. "Thanks", Billy!
The Hall was decorated with red, white, and blue table covers that set the mood for the ceremony. The front of the room display included a monument honoring all "Fallen Soldiers From All Wars" and a table set for one person, so we will never forget those who gave their lives so we can be free today.
Our guest speakers were members of the Post talking about things they remembered about comrades they knew or had served with in the past. The patriotic music was furnished by Chaplain McGraw and his wife, with the members joining in for a sing-along of "God Bless America", "The Star Spangled Banner", and "America, The Beautiful".
Commander Stroud brought attention to the red, white, and blue wreath and the "Fallen Soldier" monument. Closing prayer was by Chaplain McGraw and the ringing of the Memorial Bell concluded the ceremony.

IN HONOR OF ALL FALLEN SOLDIERS
The base is red for their blood that was shed.
The rifle, with bayonet, is inverted to show it's time for prayer to honor our comrades who gave their lives.
The dog tag is blank to show honor to all veterans who made the supreme sacrifice so we can be free.
The boots have made their last march to battle and are no longer needed.
The helmet shows that this is a fallen soldier who gave his life for us.
Remember, "Freedom is not Free."
