SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION NEW ROADS 248 OCTOBER, 2008 NEWSLETTER SPONSORS – this is the tenth issue for 2008. We are thankful to you that have renewed for this year. Once again we look forward to advertising your ad in our monthly newsletter. This is your second renewal notice for your ad in our 2009 newsletter. MEMBERSHIP 2009 - July 1st starts the New Year. We already have 10 early birds from the drawing last year, 2 paid up for life members, and 97 members that have paid their dues. With this mailing is a notice for your renewal. We still have 25 members that have not paid their dues as of this issue. Let us work together to get our 100% in early so we can devote time to what we are here for; assist our veterans and their families. Our renewal percentage is 81.34% as of this newsletter.
NATIONAL EMERGENCY FUND – if any of our members have been evacuated, you may qualify for $500.00 from the NEF. You must have been displaced in order to qualify. Please call 1-800 433-3318 and they will either help you or direct you as to what you need to do.
EARLY BIRD CAMPAIGN – with the canceling of our meeting last month, we will pull for two months in October. Remember if your dues are paid, you have a chance to win like all the others who have paid.
RECRUITMENT – each of you that are members should be looking to sign up a new member. This is not the job for the Commander and Vice Commanders. All correspondence received from National reads – "membership is everyone’s responsibility".
BLOOD DRIVE – this blood drive was the second to largest that we have had since September 2002. There were some problems when the techs arrived, but the issue was handled by 12:30 and we were able to complete our drive. We collected 24 units.
HURRICANE CLEANUP – for those of you who were not aware, we did have roof damage, ceiling damage, and floor damage. There were also tree limbs scattered along the fence line. Special thanks go to the following members who assisted Commander Vincent with the cleanup: John Leonard, Michael Comeaux, Danny Howard, Blaine Porche, and Camille LeJeune.
CONDOLENCES – goes out the Hilary J. Langlois, Sr. Family. Hilary, Jr. is a member of our Squadron. Please keep the Langlois family in your prayers.
GARAGE SALE – was a success for the Auxiliary and the Sons. After expenses were taken from the proceeds and the money was divided into two. Over $300.00 was deposited into our account.
VETERANS DAY – again this year we will be placing flags at False River Mausoleum on Saturday and Sunday morning. There will not be an annual celebration but we will be putting small flags on the graves. Flags will be assembled Friday night (November 7th) at 6pm at the post home. Flags will be placed at the grave site on Saturday and Sunday mornings around 9am.
6th DISTRICT CONFERENCE - will be held this Saturday at Covington Post 16 at 9am. The Community Service Scrapbook Award will be presented when I give greetings to the Legionnaire’s. Remember, Louisiana received the award for the Detachment and for Squadron 248.
