Veterans Honored At Newellton Elementary School Program |
Students at Newellton Elementary School, under the coordination of Ms. Annie Marshall, presented a special Veteran’s Day Program Thursday, November 11, 2010 at the Newellton Elementary Gymnasium, honoring our Tensas Parish Veterans. The program began at 9:30 a.m. and was dedicated “In Loving Memory” to Mr. Louis Hamilton and Mr. James Doyle. Jamar Frazier and Mark James presented the flags, leading a processional of the Veterans who attended the program. Mrs. Sheila Clark performed “The National Anthem,” followed by “The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag” led by Cub Scout Pack #406. Tyler Maynard gave the Invocation. “Tributes To All Who Served” included: “God Bless the USA” sung by the Kindergarten Class; Greetings given by Miss N.E.S.,Erika Bass; “Lighting of a Candle in Memory of Our Fallen Heroes” and “A Cadence: Salute to All Military Branches” presented by Mrs. Hernandes’s First Grade Class just about stole the show by demonstrating the branches of the military using their arms, legs, etc. Other tributes were poems “This Land We Love” and “Sometimes the World Seems” recited by Mrs. Gray’s Second Graders; Ms. Clark and Ms. Douglas’s Third Graders recited the poem, “Because of You Unknown Soldier”, followed by a praise dance by the 21st Century Dance Troupe. The Fifth Grade paid tribute, a Veteran’s Day Education and Recognition, under the direction of their teacher, Ms. Bradley and Corianne Frazier recited the poem “In the Eyes of Veterans”. Mr. Marzell’s Sixth Grade presented “A Soldier’s Cry”. “The Bravest Man I Know” by Tanganika South was the 8th Grade contribution from Mrs. Thomas’s class. Mr. Virgil Holder, Retired Mess Sgt. with the U.S. Army National Guard, was the guest speaker. He talked about his 21 years of duty serving meals to soldiers in simulated combat situations and how the Veterans all appreciated the honor service, but felt the ones who didn’t make it back are the ones who should be honored. “We are the lucky ones,” he said. “We came back from wars. Others did not.” He encouraged the boys and girls to do their best and prepare themselves spiritually, physically, and mentally so that they will be ready to assume the duties other young people are performing now. He told them the time for them to “take over the reins” is coming sooner than they may realize. The recognition of the Veterans and presentations of pins were conducted by Miss NES and her Court. Veterans who served in wars and conflicts from WWII through Afghanistan and present skirmishes were honored. Fourth Graders ended the program with “God Bless the USA”, followed by remarks from Mrs. Quanteeta McCarthy, Principal. The 2010 Homecoming Court escorted the Veterans in the recessional.
