My name is Mike McNaughton and I am currently employed as the Public Affairs Officer for the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs. In 2002 I deployed with the 769th Engineers out of Baton Rouge Louisiana to Bagram Afghanistan. I was in charge of mine clearing. On January 9th 2003, I walked in an area supposedly clear of land mines but as I was walking on to a road I stepped on one. I lost my leg above the knee and 2 fingers on my right hand. My recovery was not easy but I used sports to help me physically and mentally. I have done a lot of running from 5k’s to Marathons and I used it to help Charities that take care of wounded Military men and women.
This year I have just finished doing something different, I rode a bicycle from Washington D.C to Lowes Motor Speedway in North Carolina for The Road 2 Recovery. The ride began on May 20 and finished Memorial Day Weekend, May 25. The Road 2 Recovery is produced by the Fitness Challenge Foundation, in partnership with the VA Volunteer Service Office, to benefit Mental and Physical Rehabilitation Programs that feature cycling as the core activity. I knew it was going to be hard for me but I truly believe in this program and what it can do for our men and women coming back from Afghanistan and Iraq. I would like to thank all of you who sponsored me in this ride. Please go to http://www.road2recovery.us.com for more information on the program. Mike
