LOUISIANA AMERICAN LEGION POST 397 MEMBER RECEIVES LOUISIANA GOVERNOR’S GOLD AWARD, VETERAN OF THE YEAR 2009
In an effort to increase public awareness and acknowledge the efforts of those that have advanced the quality of life for Louisiana's disability community, the Governor's Office of Disability Affairs annually host the Governor's Outstanding Leadership in Disabilities Awards. Awards are presented to individuals, organizations, agencies and employers whose contributions have advanced the opportunities of individuals with disabilities or for those who have been selfless in serving the disability community in Louisiana.
The GOLD Awards were held on December 8th, 2009 at the Historic Old Louisiana State Capital, Baton Rouge, LA. The Veteran of the Year award recognizes a disabled veteran who has served honorably in the United States Armed Forces and has a record of exemplary services in the disabled community. The 2009 GOLD Award recipient for the “Veteran of the Year Award” was Commander Larry L. Jones United States Coast Guard, who retired in 2007. He served as an AFOSI Special Agent from 1973-1983 before transferring to the USCG. Prior to retirement from the USCG and since then he has dedicated himself to helping all veterans and in particular those with disabilities. He has been a service officer with the Disabled American Veterans organization, Hospital Services Coordinator with the Veteran’s Affairs Hospital, DAV Transportation network coordinator, serves on the EAC for Post 397, American Legion District 2 Boy Scout Chairman, Department of Louisiana Hospital Services Chairman and serves on the Mayor’s Military Advisory Committee in New Orleans and most recently coordinated three chartered aircraft flights from New Orleans taking World War II veterans to Washington DC to visit the WW II memorial. He is an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
